The School Council

The School Council provides a forum where children have a voice, and an opportunity to express their opinions on various issues, including suggesting ideas to make the School even better. One, or sometimes two, representatives are chosen from each class to be on the School Council.  There are several different roles within the council, such as the chairperson, vice chairperson, treasurer and secretary.  The Council meets every Monday lunchtime to discuss the issues that are presenting themselves and to consider how to deal with them, as well as talking about further improvements that could be made.

Initiatives

The School Council has had a major impact in recent years, with such initiatives as the introduction of water bottles in class, an E-Free Week, removal of the fizzy drinks machine, introduction of a healthy eating tuck shop, improved school meals, review of the Code of Behaviour and Anti-Bullying Policy, transport to school and a focus on waste and recycling with a Green Fortnight.

Action in 2011

In October, the School Council met with a representative of Eden Food Services to discuss ways in which breaktime snacks and school dinners could be changed and improved (e.g. making snacks healthier and making the meals more child-friendly).

This year’s theme

The theme for this year is ‘Playing safe in the sun’.  One of our ideas for this is to have parasols on the picnic benches, to shield children from the sun when they are sitting outside.  Another main target for the School Council this year is to produce a newsletter and everyone who is on the School Council will get involved in helping to create articles for it.
